2018 AMA SF Career Fair Highlights

  • Events, Getting Ahead

Thank you to everyone who came out to our SOLD OUT career fair! We hope you learned from and were inspired by our two speakers, Lisa Gibello and Stephen Litman, and enjoyed networking with various recruiters.

After the first round of networking, Lisa Gibello from The Creative Group educated us on current hiring trends and the best ways to go about landing a job. Competition is stiff in the marketing field. This makes it difficult for candidates to stand out among the crowd, but it also makes it difficult for hiring managers who are all competing for the same top talent. According to Lisa, it is best to “be honest with yourself and how you present yourself.” She stressed the importance of making sure your resume tells the hiring manager who you are, not just where you have worked. As marketers, our resume is the first chance to show prospective employers that we are good at what we do: if you can market yourself, chances are you will be able to market a product or service. You can find the 2018 Salary Guide here, but below are nine key takeaways from Lisa’s incredibly insightful presentation:

1. Connect – Don’t just scroll: Rather than sitting at home, scrolling through job postings and company websites, get out there and make personal connections.
2. Keep your recruiter close: If you are working with a recruiter, make sure to stay in their network because he or she may move to another company or have another job arise that you would be a good fit for you in the future. They are both a resource and a partner.
3. Have a strong online presence: How well you market yourself is the best indicator of how well you’d market a company – make sure your online presence reflects who you are.
4. Use numbers and percentages: Make sure your resume showcases quantifiable results – think numbers and percentages.
5. Show off your soft skills: Hiring managers are placing their bets on soft skills: how you present yourself in person, online, and over the phone?
6. Offer value beyond the interview: Be sure to express how would you be an asset to a company long-term.
7. Be grateful, not greedy: Know your market value and be sure to have a business case if you think you deserve to be making more money.
8. Listen to your gut: Ask yourself: “do you want a job or do you want this job?” Be sure to listen to your gut.
9. “Don’t be mediocre at a lot of things, be really good at one thing.”

After another round of networking, Stephen Litman, a Peak Performance Strategist for Tony Robbins, gave an inspiring talk that (literally) got us out of our seats doing the slow clap. Tony Robbins is an author, life coach, and motivational speaker. He hosts seminars that, according to a woman in our audience, are life changing. Stephen gave us a snapshot of this inspiration. According to Stephen, “achievement without fulfillment is the ultimate failure.” We need to look within ourselves to find what we are meant to be doing rather than conforming to what society says we should be. He encouraged us to look at our patterns, and if we are not producing the results we ought to be producing, we need to change those patterns because “nothing changes until we change.”

I will leave you with one final quote from his presentation because this one had me walking out of the room with my shoulders held high: “when you unleash and unlock what you have inside of you, the sky is the limit.” Suffice it to say, his speech and enthusiasm had me ready to unleash my potential to find success.

A special thank you to the representatives from Robert Half & The Creative Group, Crawford Group, Vitamin T, PAN Communications, Scion Staffing, and V/G and Vibes who came out to meet everyone and offer career advice, assistance, and hopefully some jobs!
